YELLOWV SUPBOARD

Engish version:

A few weeks ago I wrote a review about the (new) Heartbeat 11 (if you want to read this review again, click here). Now it was my turn to test the Tugela. I tested it twice. Once during a stormy (but great fun) sup lesson and once at my leisure under a lovely sun. Here are my findings:

Specifications of the YellowV Tugela
Length: 400 cm.
Width: 73 cm.
Thickness: 15 cm.
Maximum load: 130 kg.
To give you an idea how the ratio is to YellowV's other supboards:

The Heartbeat 08 is 250 cm long and 68 cm wide.
The Heartbeat 09 is 287 cm long and 89 cm wide.
The Heartbeat 11 is 335 cm long and 80 cm wide.
The Tugela, or the Heartbeat 13, is a lot longer at 400 cm and the narrowest of the adult boards in terms of width.

The quality of this YellowV supboard
The quality of the Tugela is really - yeah, I know, I say this as a fan too - as we should expect from YellowV. Sturdy, well finished and again equipped with all kinds of clever features. Because it's so steady and sturdy, it lies well in the water and that really increases the fun. And frankly, it also increases confidence. When I tested the Tugela for the first time, there was wind force 4 and maybe in gusts wind force 5 (want to know what that means? Then click here to read my previous blog on the Beaufort scale). The wind also came from the side. In the specifications you have already read that this board is narrower and with wind - and with that also waves - from the side you immediately notice that. Then it's really nice that the board lies well in the water, so you can really trust it!

And the smart features?

Besides of course (again) an awesome design and a game on the bottom (not sure what that refers to?), the handles are also placed in smart locations this time. To carry your supboard, the handle is placed off center (handy for short and long arms). Small note: depending on how you stand on your board, this handle may not sit as conveniently in some cases. To jointly carry the board or to access your board from various sides out of the water, the handles are located in different logical places. Two nets (front and back) and some handy D-rings have not been forgotten. The one for your leash is placed forward, which I think is a smart move, so your leash with this board length is not immediately tight. In this case, it is placed close to the kickpad, and which is another handy option. The kickpad helps you turn much faster. In order to get the nose of the board really high out of the water, it could have been placed even further back to make that even easier. For those who like it: do a search on YouTube for terms like "World Cup Supping" and see the racing competitions that take place at sea. That's where the Tugela could belong perfectly!

The differences from, for example, the Heartbeat 11:
Regarding the difference from the Heartbeat 11 I can actually be quite brief. If I want to tour at leisure, I would take the Heartbeat 11. It has more surface area and is quieter in/on the water. If I want to go for speed (read maybe racing) or try freestyle tricks, then I take the Tugela (or sometimes the flexible Heartbeat 09). The build and kickpad are really ideal for that!

My verdict on the Tugela
My first time on the Tugela I was secretly quite excited. This was due to the weather conditions, as you can read above. I decided to sit on my knees for the first few meters and only stand up when the waves came from the front (I personally find less violent than from the side). When I stood up, I noticed that you really have to work a bit harder for your balance, but the reward is great: golly, this board cut through the water beautifully.

The construction (pointy front) really contributes to this. With just a few strokes you are up to speed and after that you can make really fast meters. Lovely to say. I see this more as the raceboard from the YellowV line. By the way, you could also do cool freestyle tricks with this (accidentally learned last week from a colleague of mine). I hadn't thought of it that way, but the construction is certainly suitable for it, although for some tricks it would have been more convenient if the kickpad had been further back. Nick already predicted that I would find this supboard cool and he was right! Hence from me... drum roll....

I can hear you thinking "so why 4.5 stars and not 5?". Well, I like to challenge YellowV to keep improving (that they work so much on quality I really appreciate a lot) and this was a sample. I hope the final boards are going to be like this as well. If so, I have no choice but to make that 4.5 a 5 right away!
